During the spirit-filled days of July, hundreds of children in Phu Huu Commune, Can Tho City, received health checkups, free medication, and practical gifts. Each medical checkup, each backpack, and each notebook handed out not only demonstrates care for the children but also helps spread the tradition of “remembering one’s roots” through thoughtful, compassionate actions.
On July 25, 2026, to mark the 79th anniversary of War Veterans and Martyrs’ Day (July 27, 1947 – July 27, 2026), Children’s Hospital No. 1, in collaboration with the Can Tho City Police Department, *Vietnamese Heritage* Magazine, the People’s Committee of Phu Huu Commune, and partner organizations to organize a program providing free medical examinations, distributing free medication, and handing out gifts to children in the area.
From early in the morning, the event venue was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. Many parents brought their children even while the examination stations were still being set up. Some carried small children, while others led two or three children by the hand, patiently waiting for their turn under the attentive guidance of local officials, youth league members, and volunteers.
In the waiting area, some children were still half-asleep, nestled against their mothers’ shoulders; others looked curiously at the doctors in their white coats; and still others couldn’t hide their excitement at the sight of backpacks, notebooks, and gifts neatly arranged at the far end of the courtyard.
Those simple images created a warm atmosphere for a program that not only focused on healthcare but also conveyed care and encouragement to the local children and their families.
At the event, the medical staff at Children’s Hospital No. 1 set up several examination stations to conduct general health checkups, assess children’s nutritional status, and provide parents with advice on how to care for their children.
When each child comes in for an appointment, the doctors ask them in detail about their medical history, eating habits, daily routines, and any health concerns their family has. For very young or shy children, the doctors gently talk with them and guide them to help them feel less anxious and cooperate during the examination.
In addition to general health checkups, the children also received specialized eye and dental examinations. These are common issues among children but are sometimes not given the proper attention by parents, especially in families facing financial difficulties or who are unable to take their children for regular checkups.
During each checkup, doctors not only provide appropriate recommendations but also offer detailed explanations so that parents know how to monitor their children’s health at home, proactively prevent common illnesses, and promptly take their children to a medical facility if any unusual symptoms appear.
After being examined, the children were given the prescribed medication. Cases requiring further monitoring or specialized treatment were documented by the medical team so that arrangements could be made for their admission to Children’s Hospital No. 1.
For families facing financial hardship, the hospital’s Social Work Department will coordinate support and take steps to ensure that children have access to appropriate and timely medical care.
Outstanding Physician, Dr. Phan Ngọc Duy Cần (BSCKII)—Head of the Working Group—shared:
“During the day, the team examined many children, dispensed prescribed medications, and provided health counseling to parents. Cases requiring specialized treatment were all documented for follow-up at Children’s Hospital No. 1. We hope to bring medical expertise closer to children in underserved areas, while also helping to foster a spirit of gratitude during the commemoration of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day.”
Recognizing the significance of the program, Ms. Ngo Thi My Nhan—Vice Chairwoman of the People’s Committee of Phu Huu Commune—shared that the initiative not only brings tangible benefits to the local community but also helps promote children’s health and provides support to families eligible for government assistance and those facing significant hardships.
She acknowledged the thorough preparation, sense of responsibility, and collaborative efforts of the agencies, businesses, philanthropists, and the team of volunteers, all of which contributed to making the program safe, effective, and deeply humanitarian. At the same time, she expressed her hope that such meaningful activities will continue to be sustained and expanded in the coming period.
Beyond providing healthcare services, the program also brought joy to the children through practical gifts to help them prepare for the new school year. After completing their medical checkups, the children each received a canvas bag, a backpack, notebooks, pens, shoes, and many other school supplies.
In particular, the Organizing Committee presented 40 gifts to children from families eligible for preferential policies, families who have contributed to the revolution, and children from disadvantaged backgrounds who have consistently strived to excel in their studies. Although these gifts may not be of great material value, they embody affection, a spirit of sharing, and gratitude toward the families who have made significant contributions to the country.
Behind a day of orderly and efficient operations lies a process of thorough preparation by the collaborating units. Several days before the event, the parties developed a detailed plan covering personnel, equipment, and organizational arrangements.
On July 20, 2026, a working delegation from Children’s Hospital No. 1, along with representatives from *Van Hien Viet Nam* magazine, traveled to Phu Huu Commune to conduct a site survey. There, the delegation was welcomed by leaders of the Phú Hữu Commune People’s Committee and met with relevant departments to finalize plans for organizing and arranging the reception area, medical examinations, medication distribution, gift distribution, and the installation of specialized medical equipment.
Close coordination among local authorities, police forces, medical staff, partner organizations, and sponsoring businesses has helped create a safe, scientifically sound, and effective program; thereby not only bringing healthcare services closer to children but also strongly promoting a spirit of compassion and community responsibility.
To conclude the program, the delegation respectfully offered incense in memory of the fallen heroes at the Phú Hữu Commune Memorial, expressing their deep gratitude and carrying on the tradition of “remembering those who came before us.”
