Tây Ninh – Free Medical Checkups for Underprivileged Children in Phước Vinh Commune

More than 700 children in Phuoc Vinh Commune (Tay Ninh) received free medical checkups and gifts during a charity event held on November 15, organized by Children’s Hospital No. 1 in collaboration with local authorities. Many medical conditions were detected early, and patients were given timely guidance on follow-up care.

More than 700 children received free medical checkups

In Phuoc Vinh Commune, Tay Ninh Province, a team of doctors and medical staff from Children’s Hospital No. 1 collaborated with local authorities to organize a charitable medical examination program and distribute gifts to underprivileged children. The program was led by Distinguished Physician Phan Ngoc Duy Can, M.D., with the participation of numerous pediatric specialists, medical technicians, and volunteers.

From early in the morning, hundreds of parents brought their children to the medical examination site. The registration area was always crowded but orderly, reflecting the high demand for specialized health care in rural areas.According to statistics, the program provided general health checkups for 734 children. To ensure every child went home with a smile, the team prepared 1,000 gift packages, prioritizing underprivileged children, those in special circumstances, and cases not on the original list.

Detection of Many Important Medical Conditions Through Ultrasound

In addition to general physical examinations, the team performed abdominal ultrasounds and color Doppler ultrasounds to detect potential abnormalities.
A total of 94 children underwent ultrasound examinations, of which 14 color Doppler ultrasound cases revealed several notable issues:

• 1 case of congenital heart disease

• 3 cases of fatty liver disease
• 1 case of hepatosplenomegaly, 1 case of renal dysplasia
• 1 case of non-hydronephrotic double kidneys
• 1 ovarian cyst ~40 mm
• 1 case of fluid accumulation at the surgical incision site
In all cases of abnormalities, the team recorded the family’s information and instructed the parents to take their children to Children’s Hospital No. 1 for a thorough examination and follow-up care. What we dread the most—yet inevitably encounter on every medical outreach trip to provide care and gifts to children in difficult circumstances—is discovering severe cases that the parents were completely unaware of. We feel deep compassion for these children and sympathy for their families, who struggle so hard to recognize the signs of something wrong with their children.

76 children had their vision tested—many cases of myopia went undetected
The team also conducted vision screenings for 76 children and identified many cases of nearsightedness that the parents were unaware of.

The team presented the results, provided specific advice, and guided parents on how to take their children to get glasses with the correct prescription to minimize long-term effects on their vision.

“Early detection—early intervention” is a key goal

According to Dr. Phan Ngoc Duy Can, a board-certified specialist, mobile medical clinics help bridge the gap in access to healthcare across different regions. “In many places, parents find it difficult to take their children to large hospitals for in-depth examinations. When doctors come directly to the local community, children receive more thorough checkups, allowing for the early detection of potential health conditions,” the doctor shared.

The medical team also took the time to provide advice on nutrition, respiratory hygiene, recognizing warning signs, and monitoring chronic conditions in children. A parent whose child came in for a checkup said: “The doctor explained everything very clearly today, and our family feels more at ease now that we understand our child’s condition and know how to monitor it.”
